September 27, 2024The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is urging Mpumalanga residents to use water sparingly due to a recent drop in dam levels across the province. The overall provincial dam levels have declined slightly from 86.0% last week to 85.1% this week, with several districts and specific dams showing notable decreases.
Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande, and Nkangala districts all experienced reductions in water levels. For example, Ehlanzeni’s levels dropped from 86.5% to 85.4%, while Gert Sibande and Nkangala saw their dam levels decrease from 83.9% to 83.4% and 89.1% to 87.7%, respectively.
The Olifants and Inkomati-Usuthu Water Management Areas also recorded declines, reflecting a broader trend of water scarcity in the region. The department’s report highlighted that most dams have not improved, with many showing continued declines.
To combat this, the DWS urges the community to actively conserve water, fix leaks, and report issues promptly. The plea for careful water use is essential as dam levels continue to fall, affecting water security in Mpumalanga.
