September 26, 2024Mpumalanga Residents Urged to Conserve Water as Dam Levels Continue to Decline
September 27, 2024Mpumalanga Premier, Mr Mandla Ndlovu, has concluded his programme of engaging municipalities across the province to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges impeding service delivery. This initiative is part of his 100-day plan in office, which he committed to undertaking after being sworn in, with the aim of enhancing the provision of essential services, such as water, to meet the demands of the province’s five million residents.
On Wednesday, Premier Ndlovu, accompanied by MECs and senior officials, engaged with the remaining four municipalities in the Ehlanzeni District in Mbombela. While he commended the municipalities for their efforts in service delivery and infrastructure development over the past 30 years, he identified the debt owed to Eskom by some municipalities as a significant obstacle to effective service delivery.
The Premier also highlighted poor revenue collection as a contributing factor to these challenges. He assured municipal officials that the provincial government would increase its support for municipalities, as stipulated in Section 154 of the Constitution. Several infrastructure projects aimed at augmenting water supply were discussed, including the Kwanyathi Water Scheme, which has the capacity to supply 24 megalitres of water. However, R800 million is still needed to complete this vital project.
A comprehensive report, including recommendations to address the challenges faced by the municipalities, will be compiled next week. Premier Ndlovu reiterated the government’s commitment to improving service delivery and supporting municipalities in overcoming these obstacles.
