The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs has issued a warning to service providers about a scammer posing as an official to solicit bribes.
According to the Department, several businesses have reported receiving phone calls or SMSes from an unidentified individual claiming to represent the Department and promising guaranteed tenders in exchange for upfront payments. Officials emphasise that this is fraudulent behaviour and must be reported immediately.
The Department stated that its employees are not permitted to request money from bidders at any stage of the procurement process. Service providers are urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious communication to their nearest police station.
The Department also encouraged the public to use official channels for any enquiries to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
