The South African Cabinet has approved a major change to the validity period of driving licences for light motor vehicles, extending the renewal period from five years to ten years.
The new regulation applies to driving licence codes A, A1, B and EB, covering motorcycles and light motor vehicles. Under the revised system, motorists with these licence codes will only be required to renew their licences every ten years instead of the current five-year period.
Government says the change is intended to ease the administrative burden on motorists and improve the efficiency of the licence renewal process.
However, the extension does not apply to heavy commercial or public transport vehicles. These vehicles will continue to follow the existing renewal periods of two or five years, depending on the licence category.
Similarly, Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs) will remain subject to the current two-year renewal cycle, with no changes announced.
The new ten-year validity period represents a significant policy shift for millions of South African motorists and is expected to reduce the frequency of licence renewals while maintaining existing regulations for commercial and professional drivers.
