The Mpumalanga High Court has sentenced 40-year-old Zakhele John Mbuli to 30 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of his 25-year-old girlfriend, Lindiwe Julia Maseko.
The court heard that Maseko was killed on 7 March 2025 at Mbuli’s home in Nhlazatshe following an argument over a cellphone call. During the altercation, Mbuli repeatedly struck her on the head and neck with a pick handle, causing fatal injuries.
After the attack, Mbuli cleaned the blood from the floor, moved Maseko’s body to another room, confessed to a neighbour and later handed himself over to police. He pleaded guilty, expressed remorse and apologised to the victim’s family.
In sentencing, the court found that the murder was driven by anger and insecurity, emphasising the need to combat gender-based violence and protect women and children. Mbuli was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
