UMP and TUT Host Hackathon for AI Solutions

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP), in collaboration with Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Nedbank, recently hosted a three-day hackathon from October 25 to 27. Aimed at inspiring innovation, the event challenged students to develop AI-driven solutions for sectors like agriculture, waste management, tourism, and education.

Ten teams of students from diverse disciplines competed, presenting creative tech solutions. Top accolades went to:

1. Agri-Smart Solutions – Farm Guard: This AI tool helps farmers detect and control pests and diseases, boosting crop protection and productivity.
2. Smart Crops Solutions – Market Prediction System: An AI model that forecasts crop prices, supporting farmers in maximizing profitability.
3. Meraki – Scholar System: A digital platform aimed at enhancing educational experiences and student engagement.

The event highlighted the potential of AI in addressing local challenges and fostering a culture of tech-driven problem-solving.
