February 6, 2024A 27-year-old Zimbabwean national appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on
Monday, February 5th in connection with an explosive stash uncovered in Barberton
last week.
Thaimo Ndlovu was arrested during a tactical police operation on Friday, February 2nd
in Emjindini. A search of his residence revealed hidden electronic detonators, shock
tube assemblies, blasting cartridges, drilling bits and over 100 meters of detonating
cord.
Ndlovu was remanded in custody at his court appearance. The matter was postponed to
February 9th for bail information and February 14th for a bail application, according to
Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi.
Initial investigations found the explosives were imported from Zimbabwe. Questioning of
the suspects revealed they were sold primarily to illegal miners and criminals.
The multidisciplinary operation involved the Hawks, CIG, K9 unit and bomb squad.
Authorities applauded the collaborative effort to get these dangerous explosives off the
streets and out of the hands of criminals.
Ongoing investigations aim to determine the full scope of the operation Ndlovu was
allegedly running. Further arrests are expected.
