The event witnessed local coaches and players basking in the limelight, celebrating their remarkable achievements on the pitch.
Dr. Desiree Ellis, coach of Banyana Banyana, set the tone by clinching the Women’s Coach of the Year award, triumphing over strong contenders from Zambia and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies. Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Ellis expressed gratitude to the South African Football Association (SAFA) for their vision and support in elevating female coaches and youth teams.
Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau was crowned the Men’s Player of the Year, adding another accolade to his illustrious career. Meanwhile, Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns emerged as the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year, with Andile Dlamini of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies clinching the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year title.
Thapelo Maseko of Mamelodi Sundowns was recognized as the Men’s Most Promising Player, highlighting the promising talent emerging from South African football. Rulani Mokwena, mentor of Mamelodi Sundowns, received the prestigious Men’s Coach of the Year award, further solidifying South Africa’s football prowess.
While Percy Tau was unable to attend the awards ceremony, Dr. Danny Jordaan accepted the award on his behalf, acknowledging the remarkable progress made by the COSAFA region in recent years. Dr. Jordaan attributed the success of the region to its strong representation at major tournaments, including the recent AFCON, where COSAFA teams made significant contributions.
In addition to individual awards, the event honored various personalities for their invaluable contributions to football. SAFA Referees Committee chairperson Victor Gomes was named COSAFA Referee Legend, while veteran journalist Mark Gleeson received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his services to the media.
