Fugitive Sought for Slain Off-Duty Police Officer Hands Himself Over
May 14, 2024The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has achieved a significant breakthrough by apprehending a 23-year-old man suspected of transporting approximately R4,583,370 worth of cocaine. The arrest occurred following a minor accident on the N4 freeway near Nelspruit on Thursday afternoon.
According to police reports, a white KIA bakkie towing a trailer was traveling along the N4 road when the trailer detached from the truck, resulting in a minor collision. Upon arriving at the scene, Nelspruit SAPS officers discovered approximately eight crates containing a white powder spilled from the courier vehicle.
Sensing suspicion, the officers promptly summoned support from the K9 Unit and members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI). Upon investigation, the substances, weighing approximately 11 kilograms and suspected to be cocaine, were seized for further analysis.
An inquiry has been initiated, and the confiscated substances will undergo testing while the driver has been detained for further questioning. Police suspect that the consignment may have been destined for locations in the Gauteng province, although additional details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, commended the officers for their vigilance and urged the public to collaborate with law enforcement in combating crime.
The swift action by SAPS underscores their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of communities, as they continue to crackdown on illicit activities and criminal networks operating within the region.
