November 23, 2023Two private security guards were arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting and robbing a hitchhiker last Friday.
The victim said he was checking his phone when approached by the guards, who started “talking to him” before allegedly turning violent.
“They just began hitting me for no reason while I tried to ignore them and focus on my phone,” the victim said. “It was terrifying and confusing.”
The guards then allegedly forced the man towards their vehicle, but he refused to get in. His bag, money and sunglasses were stolen instead before the guards fled, later dumping the empty bag elsewhere.
On Tuesday, the rattled victim spotted the perpetrators’ security vehicle on patrol and quickly contacted police. Authorities intercepted the car and arrested the two identified suspects, ages 37 and 47.
Inside the vehicle were three assault rifles and ammunition, despite private security lacking any firearms authority.
“We condemn this disturbing abuse of power,” said Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Manamela. “Security officials must adhere to protocols and display discipline, not flagrant lawlessness against innocent civilians.”
With overwhelming evidence and witness testimony, authorities expect swift prosecution. But critics argue such criminal acts stem from too little oversight and regulation of South Africa’s private security industry.
“Citizens must feel protected by guards, not targeted,” said analyst Luyanda Mazwi. “Better standards could help prevent violence and exploitation.”
For now, police are being praised for their swift response before more harm was done.
