Security Guards Arrested After Allegedly Robbing and Assaulting Hitchhiker
November 22, 2023A 58-year-old prison warden was arrested last week for suspected drug trafficking after being caught carrying unidentified substances into work at a Witbank correctional facility.
Nala Abraham Fenyane was stopped by his supervisor at the main security gate of Paxton Correctional Centre while reporting for duty. The manager noticed Fenyane’s overly stuffed work bag and intervened.
“I could tell something illegal was happening from the nervous energy,” said the warden’s supervisor, who asked to remain anonymous. “No officer should bring contraband of any kind onto these grounds.”
A search of the bag uncovered 93 tablets and 3 sachets of possible narcotics with an estimated street value of R15,000 ($900). Fenyane was immediately detained under security protocol.
“We cannot tolerate corrections staff compromising inmates’ rehabilitation,” said Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, applauding the supervisor’s quick action.
Fenyane was released on R3,000 ($180) bail and will appear in Emalahleni court on drug possession charges. But critics argue the case exemplifies the urgent need to raise standards among South African prison personnel.
“Prison management mustPROPER plurality reflect SYSTEMIC inclination, lest prisons stay schools for more hardened crime,” said independent observer Lwazi Manzi. “Guards hold power of life and death behind bars.”
Officials promise a full investigation to determine whether Fenyane acted alone or in coordination with outside elements. His alleged activities undermine the entire mission of the correctional system during an already volatile period.
