Road safety prayers start easter campaign

The National Easter Road Safety Campaign kicked off in the town of Mkhondo, Mpumalanga with an unconventional start – roadside prayers. Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga led the launch alongside provincial leadership, conducting prayers at two crash hotspots along the N2 highway. Local pastors and traditional healers invoked blessings for safe travel over the upcoming Easter period.

After the roadside vigil, the campaign continued at Mandla Magudulela Stadium where Minister Chikunga and officials addressed the Thandukukhanya community. Key messages emphasized the importance of road safety, pedestrian care, and sober driving to reduce accidents and fatalities.

“We cannot keep burying our loved ones due to reckless behaviour on the roads,” Chikunga stated firmly. “Every sector of society must play its part to make our roads safer.”

Reinforcing the safety campaign, law enforcement also set up roadblocks along major routes to monitor traffic and ensure compliance with regulations.

The multifaceted approach aims to raise awareness and drive behavioural change as many families take to the roads for the Easter holidays. Province-wide activations and roadblocks will continue over the next two weeks under the #FikaSaphila and #RoadSafetyAwareness drives.

As Mpumalanga gears up for its busiest travel season, provincial authorities are leaving no stone unturned to curb the Easter road carnage.
