February 28, 2024The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has ordered peanut butter manufacturers to test products after several were found to contain high levels of aflatoxin. The naturally occurring toxin can cause liver damage and cancer if consumed in large quantities.
“We want suppliers to prove their products are safe,” said NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba. “Then we can reassure peanut butter lovers.”
Last week, major recalls were issued by companies like Woolworths and Pick n Pay after routine sampling by the NCC uncovered unsafe aflatoxin levels. All manufacturers now have 14 days to present test results.
The directive includes all foods containing peanuts, including ice cream, chocolate, and cookies. Alternatives like cashew butter have seen a spike in sales.
While low levels of aflatoxin are common in peanut butter, officials are concerned about recent elevated results. Consumers are advised to check products against recall lists and monitor media for updates.
