January 17, 2024Parents across South Africa experienced a mix of emotions as they dropped off children starting Grades 1 and R on Wednesday for the first day of the 2024 academic year. While older students resumed classes, it marked a major milestone for the new pupils.
Mother Meryke Muller said she feels nervous but excited for her son embarking on this new chapter. “I cannot believe my baby is going to grade 1, but I am very excited for him, for this new chapter in his life,” she remarked.
Muller said she knows he will build lifelong friendships and flourish in learning. But letting go remains difficult.
Fellow parent Conny Ramohale also expressed excitement about her daughter’s growth in grade R, despite expected challenges. “This is going to be a new environment for her as she is going to be based in a school-based environment, starting to learn,” Ramohale stated.
She looks forward to seeing her daughter make friends and progress, even if concentration lags initially.
As always on the first day, joy blended with tears as parents sent their little ones off. But they take comfort in knowing this major step will help children gain knowledge, independence and social bonds to last a lifetime.
The maturity and growth in store for grade 1 and R students outweigh the difficulty of letting go. Parents trust the school journey will cultivate the skills needed for bright futures.
