November 23, 2023A newborn baby girl was fortunately rescued on Thursday after being cruelly abandoned on a railway line in Belfast. The infant was heard crying inside a maize meal bag that had been dumped on the tracks near Dalmanutha.
“We were patrolling when we suddenly heard the cries of a baby,” said one railway security officer. “We rushed over and found the little girl wrapped in a bag on the rails.”
Authorities were quickly called to the distressing scene. Police and paramedics arrived to stabilize the child and transport her to a nearby hospital for further care.
“It’s unbelievable someone could be so heartless as to leave a helpless infant in such danger,” said police spokeswoman Capt. Tinyiko Khoza. “We urgently need any information that can help us locate this baby’s mother.”
Khoza implored anyone with knowledge of the mother’s identity to contact police. “As we enter the 16 Days of Activism campaign, this act of child abandonment and neglect shows we still have much work to do,” she added.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Manamela strongly condemned the incident. “This is completely unacceptable, especially as we prepare to honour victims of abuse during the activism campaign.”
The rescued baby girl was said to be in stable condition as authorities continued investigating her abandonment. Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately.
