November 23, 2023This week, an intense heatwave has enveloped Mpumalanga province, with temperatures surpassing 30°C in most areas. The South African Weather Service predicts the hot weather will persist until Friday.
In response, Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane cautioned residents to take precautions against the sweltering conditions. “We call on all our communities to act with care during this heatwave. Please keep yourselves hydrated by drinking adequate water, and protect your skin with ointments,” the Premier advised.
Mtshweni-Tsipane expressed concern that the high temperatures may lead to increased drowning incidents. “This heat will tempt people to swim in rivers and dams to cool down. For inexperienced swimmers, the risk of drowning rises significantly,” she said.
The Premier urged parents to prevent children from swimming during this period to avoid potential drownings. “We ask that all communities refrain from swimming as an option over the next few days,” she stated.
Mtshweni-Tsipane was adamant that observing all precautionary steps was vital to saving lives amidst the extreme heat. She advised residents to avoid prolonged sun exposure and stay hydrated until the weather cooled by the end of the week.
