Kruger savanna talks shape conservation

The dust has settled on another important week of science in the Kruger National Park, where the 23rd Savanna Science Network Meeting came to a close on Thursday, 5 March.

For four days, researchers, conservationists and park managers exchanged ideas on the future of Africa’s savannas, unpacking the natural systems that keep these landscapes alive and the threats that continue to test their resilience.

The gathering looked closely at the building blocks of savanna life, from geology and soils to climate pressures and vegetation change. Experts explored how hotter and less predictable conditions are affecting water, wildlife and plant life, while also raising concern over bush encroachment and the shift from open grasslands to denser woody cover.

One of the more thought-provoking parts of the programme examined the meeting point between people and wildlife. Conversations highlighted the challenge of protecting nature while also recognising the realities faced by communities living alongside these ecosystems.

As the week progressed, attention turned to fire and innovation. Fire was described not only as a destructive force, but also as an essential part of keeping savannas healthy when properly understood and managed. Scientists also showcased how satellite tracking, remote sensing and digital tools are changing the way protected areas are monitored and studied.

The final day, held under the theme Breathing Landscapes, drew attention to the powerful role played by herbivores, elephants and freshwater systems in shaping the environment. From grazing patterns to river life, the message was clear: every part of the savanna is connected.
