November 7, 2023Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says collaborative effort between multiple government departments will be launched to inspect and audit spaza shops.
Ntshavheni gave the media a briefing on the cabinet meeting from last week on Monday.
Law enforcement officials have launched a campaign against illegal spaza shops in the townships in response to the deaths of four children in Soweto and the West Rand.
The kids are said to have died from food poisoning after purchasing snacks from neighborhood spaza stores.
The government has been urged to close immigrant-owned spaza shops and reinstate food inspectors as a result of the incident, even though police are still looking into the circumstances surrounding all four deaths
Ntshavheni reported that traditional leaders and mayors of metro and district municipalities participated in an international migration workshop hosted by the Department of Home Affairs.
The workshop was hosted by Thembi Nkadimeng, Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Home Affairs.
