March 18, 2024A young boy from Chabelagaza village in Acornhoek and a truck driver transporting goods to Mozambique were detained and later released by Mozambican authorities. The truck driver, who was hauling from Phalaborwa mines to Mozambique via the R40, alerted officials after discovering the stowaway boy in his trailer upon reaching his destination.
The driver claimed he had no knowledge of the boy until opening the trailer to offload his shipment in Mozambique. He stated the boy may have climbed aboard while he was parked and resting at the Puma filling station in Acornhoek Mall.
Initially detained on suspicions of human trafficking, both the driver and boy were eventually released after negotiations. The boy told authorities he had run away from home due to being mistreated there.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between South African drivers and Mozambican officials, who have been accused of unfairly extorting funds, as happened to another trucker involved in an accident in Mozambique last December.
