March 18, 2024President Cyril Ramaphosa officiated at the 110th commemoration of King Dinuzulu ka Cetshwayo in KwaZulu-Natal province, paying tribute to the late Zulu monarch’s unwavering spirit in the face of colonial oppression. The event commenced with a wreath-laying ceremony at the King Dinuzulu Memorial in Ebukhosini.
King Dinuzulu, who ascended to the throne at a young age, led the Zulu Nation through a tumultuous period marked by colonial subjugation and attempts to divide the kingdom. Acknowledging his valiant fight against colonialism, Ramaphosa expressed deep gratitude to the Zulu Royal Family for their guidance on matters of national and international significance.
Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of preserving and honouring shared history, stating that the commemoration serves as a testament to King Dinuzulu’s enduring legacy. In collaboration with the Royal Household, academics, historians, and cultural groups, various activities are underway, including a commemorative conference, a choral music festival, and research publications exploring the role of King Dinuzulu and other notable traditional leaders in shaping South Africa’s path to democracy.
The President acknowledged the resilience of the Zulu Nation and its traditions, commending their perseverance in the face of adversity. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a society that embraces cultural diversity and upholds the values of unity and reconciliation.
