Residents of Mashishing, Lydenburg, have been left shocked after a local hospital worker was arrested for being in possession of human tissues.
The 39-year-old suspect, identified as Rose Mnisi, was apprehended by the Lydenburg K9 Unit on Wednesday, 17 September, after police received a tip-off that she was allegedly looking for potential buyers for the tissues.
According to police reports, Mnisi was stopped along Voortrekker Street while carrying a plastic bag. On inspection, officers discovered human placentas inside. She later confirmed that she works as a cleaner in the maternity ward of a local hospital.
The suspect was arrested on the spot, and the contents of the bag were seized for forensic analysis. She has been charged with illegal possession of human tissues, and police say further charges may follow as the investigation continues.
Mnisi appeared before the Mashishing District Court on Thursday, 18 September, where her case was postponed to 25 September for further investigation and her bail application. She remains in custody.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrest.
“This incident once again reflects deep moral decay in society. The Police will continue to work with communities in addressing crime,” he said.
Police have commended community members for coming forward with information, stressing that cooperation between residents and law enforcement remains vital in tackling crime in the province.
