Survey reveals rising support for coalition government
A recent survey conducted by the Brenthurst Foundation has unveiled a growing sentiment
among South African voters in favor of a coalition government. According to the findings,
76% of respondents expressed their willingness for a coalition to govern the country,
marking an increase from 74% in October 2023.
The survey delved into voter preferences, revealing that 29% favored the Multi-Party Charter
coalition, while 25% and 24% leaned towards an ANC-DA coalition and an ANC-EFF
coalition, respectively.
The data unveiled notable shifts in party support, with the ANC’s backing falling to 39%, the
DA’s rising to 27%, and Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto we Sizwe Party garnering 13% of the vote.
The EFF stood at 10%, while the IFP’s support declined to 2%, down from 7% in October
2023.
In the pivotal province of Gauteng, the survey indicated a surge for the DA, with 32% of the
vote (up from 24% in October 2023), while the ANC’s share dropped to 34% (down from
37% in October 2023). Notably, the Multi-Party Coalition emerged as a formidable force,
capturing 38% of the vote.
The survey also hinted at a potential political upheaval in KwaZulu-Natal, where Zuma’s MK
Party is poised to become the largest party with 25% of the vote, closely followed by the
ANC (20%), DA (19%), and the IFP (19%). Collectively, the Multi-Party Coalition garnered
39% of the vote in the province.
