January 29, 2024Continuous torching of cars in Calcutta has police concerned, with the provincial
commissioner condemning the “outrageous actions”.
On Wednesday, January 24, four vehicles including a minibus, a light delivery vehicle
and two sedans were set alight inside a victim’s yard in the Soweto Trust area of
Calcutta just after midnight, Mpumalanga police said.
The owner told police he was woken by a loud bang and saw his vehicle on fire.
Gunshots were also heard near the gate. Police found empty rifle cartridges at the
scene.
This follows two similar torchings of minibuses in Calcutta on January 6 and 17. No
arrests have been made.
Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela said a team of investigators
was appointed with other stakeholders to restore stability.
“We are on high alert, monitoring the situation closely due to these unusual events,”
Manamela said.
“We are deeply concerned about these outrageous actions whereby people’s properties
are just destroyed like that. We call for calm as well as for law and order to prevail whilst
law enforcement agencies proceed to work together towards getting to the bottom of the
challenge.”
Police urged anyone with information to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or
MYSAPSAPP. Tip-offs can be anonymous.
