September 2, 2024The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and Gautrain have confirmed an integrated train service for the Springboks’ match against New Zealand this Saturday at Emirates Airline Park, formerly known as Ellis Park Stadium, in Johannesburg.
In a joint statement, the organisations announced that PRASA’s People’s Train will operate a seamless service from Park Station to Ellis Park Station, located near the stadium. With over 62,000 spectators expected, the train service, which can carry 2,400 passengers per trip, will run every 15 minutes from 10:30 am to 9:30 pm.
“The Gautrain will extend its evening service and maintain its regular schedule. Metrorail journeys will be free for match ticketholders, while standard Gautrain fares and parking fees will apply,” the statement said.
Gautrain passengers can travel from various stations to Park Station and then transfer to PRASA trains. Marshals will be available to guide commuters. The last PRASA train departs Ellis Park Station at 9:30 pm, and the final Gautrain train leaves Park Station at 10:00 pm.
Both train services will connect with other transport options, including e-hailing services and corporate buses, to facilitate travel to Park Station. A R50 flat fee will be charged for parking at Park Station. PRASA has also made its head office near Park Station available for e-hailing drop-offs and pick-ups.
This special train service aims to provide an efficient and stress-free travel option for fans, alleviating traffic congestion around the stadium and reducing cellphone network interruptions.
Safety remains a top priority, with additional security measures in place from the City of Johannesburg, South African Police Service (SAPS), Gautrain, and PRASA at stations, on trains, and within the stadium precinct.
Tshepo Kgobe, Gautrain Management Agency Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the initiative’s role in integrating various transport modes and enhancing accessibility to major sporting events.
PRASA Group Chief Executive Officer Hishaam Emeran emphasised the agency’s commitment to supporting both daily commutes and major events, noting the refurbishment of the Park Station to Germiston line as part of their ongoing efforts to restore national commuter rail services.
“We are excited to demonstrate our role as a key mass carrier for leisure and sporting events, complementing our core commuter services,” Emeran said.
