In a devastating incident on the R104 Road near Mafube Village, between Wonderfontein and Arnot, a bus transporting thirty learners from Morneg School collided with a train, resulting in the tragic loss of five students’ lives. The accident occurred in the afternoon when the bus allegedly crossed the railway line while the train was too close, leading to the fatal crash.
Five learners were pronounced dead at the scene, and eleven others sustained serious injuries. Additionally, eleven individuals, including the bus driver and train operator, suffered slight injuries. Emergency services personnel remain at the scene, working diligently to manage the aftermath of the incident.
The MEC has expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He has also called for a thorough investigation into the crash, emphasizing the need for accountability and stating that the law must act decisively to punish those found responsible.
“We cannot lose such young and innocent lives due to recklessness,” stated the MEC Jackie Macie, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures and strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
