November 21, 2023A horrific crash left five dead and two seriously injured along R35 Road between Amersfoort and Morgenzon yesterday in an alarming display of the severe dangers on local highways.
Authorities say a sedan carrying four passengers collided front-on with another sedan around 3:45 pm Monday. All five victims, including one driver, were declared dead on the scene before paramedics could even attempt treatment.
Two additional passengers suffered critical wounds, likely to include traumatic brain injuries and broken bones based on the sheer force involved. A third person miraculously got away with just slight injuries.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, authorities believe risky overtaking manoeuvres could be to blame. “Passing in no-pass zones continues to kill citizens on roads meant to connect our communities,” said Vusi Shobgwe, MEC for Community Safety Security.
Shobgwe appealed fervently to all drivers to follow safety precautions and show consideration for others. “When we get behind the wheel, we hold enormous power over life and death,” he said gravely. “One poor choice can destroy many families in an instant.”
Counsellors have been dispatched to comfort grieving relatives of those lost. The MEC also conveyed its deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy.
As South Africa continues on a concerning trend of rising roadway fatalities each year, officials implore motorists to slow down, avoid distractions, and drive defensively. Simple diligence could spare the next innocent victim.
Citizens are also encouraged to report any observed dangerous or impaired driving immediately before the next heartbreak. There have been far too many this year already.
