Three Foreign Nationals Arrested in Sabie

On 11 May 2025, three foreign nationals aged between 18 and 38 were arrested during Operation Vala Umgodi at the Simile informal settlement in Sabie, Mpumalanga. The suspects were apprehended by the Proactive and Combat team after failing to produce valid documentation, leading to charges under the Immigration Act of South Africa.

During the operation, law enforcement officials discovered abandoned illegal mining equipment, including gas cylinders, phendukas, and other illicit tools. The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on 12 May 2025.

Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, commended the officers involved for their continued efforts in combating illegal mining activities in the province. He emphasized the importance of such operations in maintaining law and order and protecting the country’s natural resources.

Operation Vala Umgodi is part of a broader initiative by SAPS to address illegal mining and related offenses across South Africa. In previous operations, numerous suspects have been arrested for contraventions of the Immigration Act and possession of illegal mining equipment. These efforts underscore the commitment of law enforcement agencies to tackle the challenges posed by illegal mining and unauthorized immigration.
