March 7, 2024President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a stern warning to those threatening election unrest, vowing that “anyone found instigating election unrest will be arrested.” His comments come after the leader of the MK Party in KwaZulu-Natal, Visvin Reddy, stated outside a Durban court that there would be “bloodshed” if the party is barred from contesting the May 29th elections.
The ANC has taken the Electoral Commission to court over the registration of the MK Party, citing its name and logo’s similarity to the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association. Ramaphosa did not mince words, stating, “I just want to make it very clear to everyone who is threatening any form of unrest. They will be followed up and arrested. Those are people who belong in jail, people who are enemies of our democracy.”
The President emphasized South Africa’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law, adding, “South Africans value this hard-earned democracy, and they do not want any form of instability. We have always followed the rule of law. When you are not satisfied with any decision, there are ways in which all those complaints can be followed up.”
Ramaphosa’s warning shots have been fired as the nation braces for potential unrest leading up to the upcoming polls.
