Brothers shot dead and two others in hospital
February 27, 2024The murder of a 74-year-old German tourist by three strangers he befriended serves as a sobering reminder about the dangers of trusting unknown people while travelling.
The victim offered a hitchhiker a ride into South Africa from Botswana on Saturday. After developing a rapport, he allowed the man to drive and even met his two friends at a liquor store.
“That’s when the suspect informed his two friends that the tourist is expecting a substantial amount of money from his family abroad,” police said.
Oblivious to their sinister motives, the tourist went with the trio to his accommodation where they tied him up, beat him, and robbed him.
“They searched him and took an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables,” police added.
After removing the car’s number plates, the assailants drove around assaulting the man before dumping his battered body on a remote farm. Two suspects fled but were swiftly arrested.
Limpopo Police Commissioner Thembi Hadebe praised officers for apprehending the suspects but lamented the stranger’s misplaced trust.
“The victim had trusted this ruthless criminal, but he turned against him and, together with his friends, tortured and brutally killed him,” Hadebe said.
This horrific attack is a stark warning about exercising caution with strangers while travelling. Personal safety must always be the priority, no matter how friendly strangers may seem. For this poor tourist, his kindness was tragically repaid with cruelty.
