December 3, 2024A 15-year-old boy from Stonehenge tragically passed away at Mediclinic Nelspruit on November 30, after being found in distress in a swimming pool.
Emergency Response
According to Martin Jeffrey, Emer-G-Med’s operations manager, neighbors discovered the boy struggling in the water and pulled him out before attempting to rush him to the hospital. Emergency services met them en route, taking over and administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police Investigation
Colonel Donald Mdhluli, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed an inquest has been opened to investigate the circumstances of the drowning. Preliminary findings revealed the boy had a history of epilepsy, which could have been a contributing factor.
Mdhluli expressed concern about the rising number of drowning incidents and urged parents to exercise caution. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the boy’s family during this difficult time,” he said.
Family and Community in Mourning
The boy’s grieving mother requested privacy and asked that her son’s name not be published. Described as a talented sportsman and a student at a Mbombela high school, the community is mourning the loss of a promising young life.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident while raising awareness about water safety during the festive season.
