A tragic accident on the R40 road near The Village guest house in Acornhoek, captured on CCTV, resulted in two fatalities and serious injuries to two others this Sunday afternoon. The incident involved a police-owned VW Golf 7, reportedly taken without permission from a local car wash where it had been left for cleaning.
The crash occurred when a car wash employee, who had taken the Golf 7 to buy equipment for the business, attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with a Polo. The Golf then veered into oncoming traffic, leading to a head-on collision with a tipper truck. Both the truck and the Golf swerved off the road, resulting in the immediate deaths of the Golf’s driver and passenger.
The presence of the police vehicle at the car wash, typically a routine stop for maintenance, has raised questions about the security protocols for police vehicles. The incident has sparked a debate on social media about the practice of leaving vehicle keys with car wash personnel.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the theft and the crash. More information is expected as the police piece together the details of this incident.
