The Calcutta South Africa Police Service and the Mathibela Traditional Council hosted a successful sports and safety awareness campaign at the Oakley Bakoena Sports Ground on June 8, 2024. The event aimed to engage the community through sports while raising awareness about crime and safety issues in Mkhuhlu, Oakley, and surrounding areas.
The tournament featured soccer for boys and netball for girls, drawing over 500 participants and spectators. While promoting physical activity and community spirit, the primary objective was to highlight crime prevention and the importance of safety for the well-being of all residents. Sports play a crucial role in fostering peace, supporting sustainable development, creating jobs, and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
Key community figures and sponsors were instrumental in the event’s success. Among the notable attendees were Executive Manager of MTPA Mr. Ntwanano Mtungwa, Calcutta Station Commander Col. Mayindi Ge, MMC for Public Safety Cllr. Mhaule, MMC for Arts, Sports, and Recreation Cllr. Gumede, and sports legends Bennett Chenene and Avril Phali. Additionally, Coach Macdonald Makhubedu, referee Victor Hlongwane, and the ABC Motsepe League Mpumalanga champions Kruger United FC graced the event, along with local artists Master H and DJ Max.
In the soccer tournament, Black Swallows triumphed over Marite Rangers with a score of 2-0, with both teams receiving new jerseys from sponsors. In netball, Mocky Stars defeated Crystal Lake 15-12, earning new jerseys and trophies.
The event successfully inspired and united the community, highlighting the power of sports to build a healthy and safe environment for all.
