Sibiya Challenges Police Chief’s Suspension Order
September 3, 2025A group of nine South Africans, including Mandla Mandela—the grandson of former President Nelson Mandela—are among hundreds of international activists taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest civilian maritime mission yet attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The African National Congress (ANC) has praised the courage of the South African participants. In a statement issued on 3 September, the ANC described their voyage as a powerful symbol of international solidarity with the Palestinian people, one that strongly echoes South Africa’s own liberation struggle. The party stressed that this peaceful mission reflects its long-standing support for the Palestinian cause and complements the government’s legal action at the International Court of Justice.
The flotilla consists of more than 50 vessels from at least 44 countries, carrying supplies such as baby formula, antibiotics, medical kits, staple foods, clothing and essential medicines. Those on board include activists, doctors, lawyers, journalists, human rights defenders and public figures such as Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, former Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, and American actress Susan Sarandon.
The mission began from ports including Barcelona on 31 August, with vessels set to rendezvous in Tunisia before sailing towards Gaza.
The name “Sumud”, meaning steadfastness in Arabic, reflects the determination of participants to challenge Israel’s long-standing naval blockade of Gaza and open a humanitarian corridor. Organisers argue that international governments have failed to exert adequate pressure, leaving civil society to act.
Greta Thunberg, participating for a second time after being deported during an earlier attempt in June, criticised global inaction and underlined the mission’s importance in defending human rights.
In its statement, the ANC reaffirmed its solidarity with those who believe humanity must triumph over oppression. It also called on the South African government to extend full consular assistance to the participants.
