The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) conducts social grant reviews to ensure that beneficiaries remain eligible for financial assistance. Here’s what you need to know about the process.
What is a social grant review?
A social grant review is a verification process carried out by SASSA to confirm that recipients continue to meet the criteria for receiving social assistance.
Why must beneficiaries complete a grant review?
Grant reviews help prevent fraud and duplicate claims, protecting public funds. Beneficiaries are also expected to update personal details such as marital status, residential address, and contact information—changes that may have occurred since their initial application, sometimes months or even years earlier.
How often are grant reviews conducted?
Reviews typically occur annually or when there are changes in a beneficiary’s circumstances. SASSA may also initiate a review if discrepancies are found during data verification.
How are beneficiaries notified?
SASSA usually sends notifications via mail, SMS, social media, or public announcements. Recently, reminders have also been included in the final monthly payment run, usually mid-month. Beneficiaries should never ignore these messages and must update contact details promptly when they change.
What happens if a beneficiary does not attend a review?
Failure to attend a scheduled review can result in the suspension or lapse of the grant until eligibility is reconfirmed.
Which documents are required?
Beneficiaries should bring identification, proof of income for themselves and their spouse, birth certificates of dependents, proof of residence, and proof of marital status. Refugees must present valid refugee documentation. If some documents are not yet available, proof of application from the Department of Home Affairs should be provided. Depending on circumstances, SASSA may also request additional documents such as municipal rates records.
