The Mpumalanga Department of Education says MEC Bonakele Majuba received news of the tragedy with great dismay, extending deepest condolences to the grieving family, educators and classmates of the learner. Majuba travelled to the rural school and extended his added support on Thursday.
Counsellors are currently providing emotional assistance to students as the community mourns the devastating loss. MEC Majuba called for healing and encouragement of peers through this difficult period.
Snake experts remind us that multiple native serpent species can deliver fatal bites, including mambas, cobras and puff adders. Citizens should learn identification markings, avoid interacting with shy creatures, and back carefully away if crossed.
We caution kids walking home at night and farmers working lands to be extra vigilant of snakes that may lash out if startled. Bites often happen accidentally when simply startled.
Snakes hide in the bush and tall grasses. People should know to stay away if they see a hissing snake. Do not try touching snakes! Stay calm and move slowly away. If a snake bites you, get help extremely quickly.
Calling this “a parent’s worst nightmare,” MEC Majuba affirmed commitments to continue encouraging safety protocols for all future school excursions. For now, thoughts remain with the heartbroken family forced to bury a daughter taken far too soon.
