Black Tax Draining South African Family Finances
September 15, 2025Innovation took centre stage at the Kasi Business Workshop in Kanyamazane when Penwell Silinda, founder of Smart D App, claimed the top prize in this year’s Kasi Pitching Challenge.
Smart D App is a multipurpose platform that combines ride-hailing, food delivery, payments, logistics and shopping, designed to make township life easier while creating new economic opportunities. Judges and attendees were impressed by its scalability and potential to generate jobs.
“Winning this competition validates the vision behind Smart D App. Townships deserve access to technology that works for them. This prize means we can expand our services, reach more people, and create more jobs,” Silinda said.

The pitching challenge, now in its fourth Mpumalanga edition, offered township entrepreneurs the chance to compete for R50 000 in cash and business support. Other contestants included Wandile Khumalo (Ghost Astronaut Studios), Gracious Sengwayo (Dirtyfree Pty Ltd), Khensani Thela (Khendo Pty Ltd), Pule Magudu (Agriroot Poultry Pty Ltd) and Vincent Ngwenya (TVS Lounge/Nkomazi Pizza).
The workshop was more than just a competition. Business leaders and mentors stressed commitment, discipline and financial responsibility as keys to sustainable entrepreneurship. Former winner Rendani Madilonga shared how consistency and client respect enabled his growth, while panellists from MEGA, NYDA, SEFA and the Department of Economic Development urged entrepreneurs to formalise operations, keep financial records and embrace mentorship.
For Silinda, the prize is not only a boost for his business but also an inspiration to others:
“This isn’t just a win for me, it’s a win for every township entrepreneur trying to build something bigger than themselves.”
