August 14, 2024In a recent court ruling, sixteen Mozambican women were found guilty and sentenced for contravening the Immigration Act. The verdict was handed down by the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 13 August 2024.
The group was apprehended on Friday along the N4 highway near Kaapmuiden. They were traveling in two taxis from Mozambique to Johannesburg, South Africa, without the necessary permits or passports.
With representation from Legal Aid, the court imposed a sentence of either a R2000 fine or six months in prison, wholly suspended for five years on the condition that they are not convicted of a similar offence during the suspension period. Additionally, the court ordered the immediate deportation of the accused back to Mozambique.
Meanwhile, the cases of fifteen Mozambican males, arrested under similar circumstances, have been postponed to 20 August 2024. They remain in custody pending further legal proceedings as they await representation from Legal Aid.
Investigations into the case continue as authorities work to address issues related to immigration violations.
