Six Arrested in Kusile Power Station Fraud Scheme, Two Suspects Still at Large

At least six individuals are set to appear in court this week in connection with a fraudulent procurement scheme at Kusile Power Station in Mpumalanga.

According to Eskom, the arrests were made following a coordinated intelligence-driven operation and investigation.

“Six individuals were arrested for their involvement in a fraudulent procurement scheme at Kusile Power Station. Among those apprehended are a former Kusile Procurement Officer and a Procurement Manager,” Eskom stated.

Fraudulent Procurement Exposed
Investigations revealed that in 2018, a pump was unlawfully procured for R857,977, despite an identical pump—with the same serial number—having been purchased in 2015 for only R18,835. This fraudulent transaction resulted in a significant financial loss for the power utility.

Meanwhile, two additional suspects remain at large, with law enforcement agencies actively pursuing them.

Crackdown on Corruption at Eskom
These arrests are part of ongoing efforts by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) Energy Safety and Security Priority Committee to combat fraud, corruption, and criminal activities within Eskom’s supply chain and South Africa’s energy infrastructure.

Eskom reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out corruption, stating that while these investigations are complex and time-intensive, the latest arrests signal progress in ensuring accountability and justice.

Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane emphasized the company’s stance on corruption:
