August 29, 2024The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has praised the collaborative efforts between SAPS members and private security companies following the successful arrest of six suspects involved in the alleged theft of copper and chrome in Bethal. The arrest took place on 28 August 2024, at around 14:00.
According to reports, the suspects were caught in the act by security personnel. Upon noticing the security officers, the suspects attempted to flee in a white Toyota Avanza. However, the security team maintained visual contact with the vehicle as it headed in the direction of Standerton.
Additional backup was called, and police officers along with other security personnel from Standerton joined the pursuit. The suspects’ vehicle was eventually intercepted, leading to the apprehension of all six individuals. Some of the stolen goods were recovered during the arrest.
Further investigations will be carried out to determine if there are additional stolen items concealed elsewhere and to verify the status of the vehicle used in the crime.
Major General Mkhwanazi expressed his satisfaction with the effective partnership between various law enforcement agencies, stating, “Working together always produces positive results. Our partnership with other law enforcement agencies is proving to be highly effective in reducing crime levels. This arrest should serve as a clear message to criminals that criminality will not be tolerated in this province.”
