February 13, 2024Effective school governing bodies (SGBs) are pivotal for school performance, according to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga. She recently emphasized this at the launch of the SGB elections in Pretoria.
Motshekga highlighted research showing “schools with great SGBs have 20% higher performance compared to those with less engaged parents.” She urged parents to take the upcoming March elections seriously since SGB support improves schools.
Despite their importance, SGB turnout has been low, creating issues. Motshekga explained, “Parents would call me and say, ‘In my children’s school, the fees are up.’ It is a matter they should have discussed in the SGB process.”
She continued, “You find other parents not bothered and when decisions are taken for them, they would be the first to scream to say fees have been sent up and they have not been consulted.”
Motshekga stressed that through SGB participation, parents can truly make a difference and boost learning outcomes. She called on parents to research candidates, vote in the elections, and remain engaged throughout the year.
With strong SGBs, schools see reduced dropout rates, higher matric pass rates, and more parent satisfaction. But without engaged parents on SGBs, schools struggle to unlock their full potential.
The upcoming elections provide a fresh chance for parents to step up and help schools thrive. By actively participating in SGBs, parents can create brighter futures for South Africa’s students.
