Day visits to the Kruger National Park have been temporarily suspended as persistent heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, raising safety concerns across the region.
South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure in response to deteriorating weather and road conditions. The suspension will remain in place until conditions improve and is being reviewed on an ongoing basis.
According to SANParks, the prolonged rainfall has placed considerable strain on operational and emergency response resources. The organisation said it is prioritising real emergencies and the safety of guests, staff and neighbouring communities, rather than risking avoidable incidents linked to non-essential travel within the park.
“The safety of all visitors and staff remains our highest priority,” SANParks said, adding that the suspension of day visitors is intended to reduce risk during this period of severe weather.
The impact of the heavy rains has already been felt within the park. Letaba Rest Camp is currently evacuating both staff and guests after floodwaters from the Letaba River entered the camp. In addition, Phalaborwa Gate has been closed for at least 24 hours while conditions are closely monitored. As a result, there is presently no access to the northern sections of the park.
SANParks has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing rainfall and thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation. Further updates will be issued as the situation develops and as assessments of weather and road conditions continue.
