November 24, 2023South Africa’s punishing heatwave will continue baking large swaths of the country for several more days, forecasters announced Friday.
The South African Weather Service previously expected the extreme heat event to conclude this weekend. But meteorologist Samkelisiwe Thwala now says relief may not come until the middle of next week.
“Temperatures will remain dangerously high through Sunday, especially in the northeast,” Thwala stated. She singled out Free State, North West Province, Northern Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga as the hardest-hit zones.
Only by next Thursday could cooler air finally arrive, breaking the horrific stretch of 40+ degrees Celsius days and nights plaguing citizens.
With Black Friday sales overlapping the sizzling event, officials urge shoppers to take extreme precautions while waiting in lengthy queues. “Drink water and seek shade frequently to avoid health emergencies,” Thwala advised.
The updated forecast means residents must endure the taxing heatwave for an additional 72+ hours. Fatigue and frustration may be setting in, but safety remains paramount with no respite until at least the middle of next week.
