Deputy Minister Leads Municipal Support Initiative in Mpumalanga
October 25, 2024The South African National Parks (SANParks) Air Services Unit has won the Airbus “Customer Focus Group” award at a prestigious gala dinner held in Muscat, Oman. The unit was recognised for its unique operations, standing out as the only African representative at the conference, which included participants from across Africa and the Middle East.

Chief Pilot David “Black Hawk” Simelane accepted the award on behalf of SANParks Air Services. The conference brought together aviation practitioners to discuss critical industry issues, including strategies, safety, and compliance management. In his remarks, Simelane emphasised the vital role the SANParks Airwing plays in supporting reaction teams on the ground, particularly in the expansive landscapes of the national parks.
Airwing’s Role in Conservation and Anti-Poaching Efforts

The SANParks Airwing operates as a key component of the Area Integrity Management unit, which aims to enhance safety and security across the national parks. The Airwing works closely with anti-poaching teams, supporting rangers and K9 dog units in their efforts to combat wildlife crime. The unit’s work is essential for maintaining the integrity of South Africa’s protected areas, where poaching and other illegal activities pose significant threats.
In addition to anti-poaching operations, the Airwing supports a range of other crucial conservation initiatives. This includes collaborating with specialists such as veterinarians and scientists on projects like wildlife censuses and dehorning operations. These activities are vital for the protection of endangered species.
