December 13, 2023Two suspects arrested in connection with an April 2021 cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that left a guard dead have been served with indictments to stand murder trial. Fortune Bongumusa Matsane (25) and Nkosinathi Khumalo appeared in the Mbombela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, December 11 and will now face charges in the High Court on October 7th their charges include charges of Murder, Armed Robbery(Cash in transit robbery), Possession of stolen property, (2×vehicles used during cash in transit.)
The robbery occurred at the Khumbula garage in Mbombela on April 16, 2021, G4S. During the robbery, a guard was shot and killed. The suspects fled the crime scene with a Toyota Hilux and BMW from the Local Criminal Record Centre.
Matsane was already in custody for the alleged murder of a German tourist in 2022 when served this latest indictment.
Khumalo remains in custody on charges linked to the murder of a police officer in Tonga. The Hawks and other agencies continue to investigate the CIT robbery and further arrests may follow. The accused will stand trial for murder, armed robbery, possession of stolen vehicles and property.
The case was postponed to 7 – 25 October 2024 in Mbombela High Court for trial. More arrests are imminent. Investigation continues.
