March 19, 2024Ensuring access to clean water, a basic human right
March 19, 2024Aware.org, an organization dedicated to reducing harmful alcohol use, commemorated
Human Rights Day by reinforcing its commitment to promoting responsible alcohol
consumption. The organization highlighted the critical intersection between human rights and
responsible drinking.
“We’ve come a long way in working towards guaranteeing human rights for all South
Africans, but the struggle continues,” said Carmen Mohapi, Managing Director of Aware.org.
“Today, we call for an increased focus on alcohol harm reduction as a critical aspect of
upholding these rights.”
Aware.org recognizes the harmful impacts of alcohol misuse on individuals, families, and
communities. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), a lifelong disability caused by
prenatal alcohol exposure, is a stark example of how alcohol consumption can infringe upon
the fundamental right to protection and safety of every child.
The organization’s three pillars – eradicating underage drinking and FASD and reducing
drinking and driving – are key public health goals and embodiments of human rights
principles. Aware.org’s initiatives aim to empower individuals and organizations with
knowledge and resources to be part of the harm-reduction movement.
