With the festive season approaching, Mpumalanga police are urging the public to remain cautious to avoid falling prey to criminals targeting their savings, livestock, and possessions.
Alert for Cattle Owners
Cattle owners in the Hazyview and Bushbuckridge areas are advised to be vigilant and closely monitor their livestock. Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, a provincial police spokesperson, warned against purchasing stolen meat or cattle, emphasizing the consequences of being found in possession of stolen goods.
“Ensure that the live cattle or beef you buy are not stolen. Avoid buying from street vendors and purchase only from legitimate owners. Livestock should have proper identification, and owners must produce valid permits,” said Mdhluli.
He urged residents to report any suspicious activities or incidents of stock theft to their nearest police station.
Stokvel Safety Precautions
Mdhluli also cautioned members of stokvels and other savings groups to avoid carrying large sums of cash, which increases the risk of robbery.
“Instead of sharing cash, we encourage members to use electronic transfers into individual bank accounts. This reduces the likelihood of being targeted by criminals during the festive period,” he said.
Stokvel robberies have been a recurring issue, with some perpetrators allegedly colluding with group members to orchestrate thefts. Mdhluli stressed that electronic transfers and secure payment methods are safer alternatives for purchasing groceries or making payments.
General Safety Advice
The Mpumalanga SAPS urged community members to:
- Avoid sharing sensitive information about savings or personal belongings.
- Refrain from flaunting newly acquired possessions, which could attract criminals.
- Be cautious and report suspicious activities promptly.
“Think twice before boasting about your personal belongings. Protecting your safety and property is paramount during this time,” Mdhluli concluded.
These precautions aim to ensure a safer festive season for all residents while discouraging criminal activities that often spike during this period.
