December 1, 2023Police arrested one of three men who allegedly followed a pair of victims home after they withdrew cash from a Nelspruit bank on Wednesday.
“It is alleged that a white VW Polo overtook and blocked their vehicle. The suspects are said to have alighted from their vehicle while shooting randomly and forced the two victims out of the vehicle,” said spokesperson Selvy Mohlala.
The attackers reportedly robbed the victims of an undisclosed sum before fleeing. But alert police spotted the VW Polo later and gave chase near Kanyamazane.
“One of the suspects alighted from the vehicle then tried to jump the wall but was cornered,” Mohlala stated.
Officers arrested the 32-year-old and found he had a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds. The gun’s serial number was scrubbed off.
The nabbed individual now faces robbery charges for the earlier incident after the victim’s bank withdrawal. He will appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Meanwhile, the two other suspects remain at large but were brought in for questioning.
Police reminded citizens to remain vigilant about their surroundings when leaving banks. Criminals actively look for perceived easy targets carrying large cash sums.
