October 21, 2024Police in Mmametlhake are investigating the death of a 58-year-old man who was allegedly mauled by his employer’s pitbull dog in Marapyane, Mmametlhake, on 18 October 2024.
According to reports, the deceased resided on the premises of his employer, where he worked as a caretaker for the pitbulls. The dogs were typically confined and only released between 01:00 and 04:30 to patrol the property.

It is believed that the victim had gone out on 17 October 2024 and returned to his accommodation in the early hours of Friday, 18 October. It is suspected that he was attacked by one of the dogs during that time, leading to his tragic death.
The body was discovered by a security guard, who found the victim lying motionless on the ground with multiple injuries, while a pitbull was found near the scene. The employer was notified, and the authorities were contacted. Upon arrival, emergency personnel confirmed that the man had died from his injuries.
The pitbull responsible for the incident was put down by the SPCA on the morning of 19 October 2024.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, extended his condolences to the family of the deceased. He emphasised that the police are thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and an inquest case is currently underway. “We call for calm during this time and urge the public to allow the investigation team to conduct their inquiry without interference,” said Major General Mkhwanazi.
