October 1, 2024Photographers are invited to participate in the Citizen Science for Water Photo Story Competition, launched to inspire action and awareness around water conservation and management. The competition, organized by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in collaboration with the South African National Committee (SANC) for UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), aims to highlight the emotional connection between people and water through powerful storytelling.
The competition encourages public participation in scientific efforts to improve water-related knowledge and practices. It seeks to elevate stories that resonate emotionally with people, inspiring them to take positive action regarding water conservation.
Launched in Pretoria, the competition is a joint initiative of DWS, the Water Research Commission (WRC), the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the University of South Africa (UNISA), and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), among others.
Participants are encouraged to explore five key themes:
Water and Citizen Science
Water and Partnerships
Water and Education
Water and Culture
Water and Communities
According to DWS, the competition’s objectives include raising awareness about the relationship between water and various cultural, educational, and scientific aspects, encouraging youth participation, and supporting sustainable water use through creative storytelling.
The competition is free to enter for anyone aged 18 or older, and the deadline for submissions is 28 February 2025, 23:00 South African Time. The winners will be announced in March 2025, with their work showcased internationally through IHP channels. The top 15 entries will also be featured in an exhibition in June 2025 during the launch of the Photo Story Book.
