700 new police officers deployed in Mpumalanga
December 20, 2023Mpumalanga police have stopped and inspected over 83,000 vehicles statewide since the start of December, arresting over 20 motorists driving impaired along with hundreds of other traffic violations.
Authorities said Sunday that 27 total drivers have been arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving during intensified Festive Season enforcement operations. Excess speeding accounted for seven more arrests.
“About 36 motorists were arrested for various offences committed, and this included the arrest of 27 suspects for drinking and driving,” said provincial community safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi.
The campaign kicked off December 1 under the direction of MEC Vusi Shongwe, who hailed the early results but implored officers not to ease up with the holidays in full swing.
MEC Shongwe said deadly wrecks in recent days are tragic but should motivate authorities to keep the heat on delinquent motorists.
“Our law enforcement should continue working harder. They must reign in on any lawlessness and disregard for road rules,” Shongwe stated.
More patrols using roadblocks and weigh stations to catch overloaded trucks and drivers flouting basic vehicle safety standards will continue, officials report.
